Case Study: The Positive Impact of a Car Park Management Plan

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

The University of Tasmania's Cradle Coast Campus has an idyllic setting in the Northern Tasmanian city of Burnie.

The University is within a stone's throw of Burnie beach and the CBD. The campus itself is home to one of the city's most popular tourist attractions: The Penguin Discovery Centre. It also hosts a popular event space, student residential complex, band room and sports centre.

With students, all those extra-curricular activities and its convenient location, the Burnie City Council were having trouble managing the campus car park. They needed to make sure that students and authorised visitors could access a car spot when they needed it and not fall victim to the swarms of local office workers that used the campus as all-day parking.

To help optimise the car park for all users, we provided the council with a car park management plan

The Details

To put together a car park management plan, we considered:

  • How many spaces need to be available for users?

  • What times do the users need car spots?

  • What parking restrictions are appropriate?

  • What signs would need to go up to inform users of parking restrictions?

With many stakeholders involved with the University, we made sure all proposed signs were simple to read.

As the growing city of Burnie looks to the future, ensuring the car park's accessibility will help make the University a better place to be for students, staff and visitors alike.
