Technical: What to Consider for a Basement and Ramp Grade

Thinking about adding a basement to your development plans or designing an underground car park ramp for a commercial space? It’s not as simple as just digging into the ground! The grade of your basement and ramp plays a crucial role in everything from drainage and accessibility to safety and long-term durability. A poorly planned slope can lead to vehicles scraping, water pooling, and expensive work to fix the grades after construction.

At Quantum Traffic, we had a project where there was a relatively steep curved ramp going down into a basement car park. The challenge was determining the ramp grades and how they would work for low clearance vehicles.

We also had to ensure a vehicle could manoeuvre from the porte cochère into the basement so vehicles wouldn’t have to drive out of the site just to go down into the basement.

We then got to work on the basement itself: the owner required five parking spots in the basement and space was fairly tight.

Along with the architect, we came up with a detailed plan including specific advice on how to achieve five spaces, requiring sound planning to get done.
