Overview

The East Gungahlin High School, which commenced operations in 2024, is a key addition to the rapidly growing Gungahlin region, requiring a comprehensive traffic and transport assessment to support its successful integration into the surrounding network. Quantum Traffic was engaged to develop a large-scale Aimsun traffic model, assessing the impacts of school-generated traffic and ensuring that the surrounding road network could efficiently accommodate anticipated volumes.

In addition to road network and intersection planning, Quantum Traffic undertook a detailed pedestrian movement analysis, resulting in the provision of a high-standard shared path connecting the school to the existing light rail services along Flemington Road, promoting active and sustainable transport options for students and staff.

  • Public & Active Transport Integration – Ensuring seamless connectivity to the light rail network on Flemington Road through enhanced pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Challenges/Solutions

The key challenge in this project was ensuring that the surrounding road network and intersections could effectively handle peak school traffic, while also prioritising safe and efficient pedestrian movements.

  • Large-Scale Aimsun Modelling – Developed a detailed microsimulation model to accurately forecast traffic conditions, congestion points, and network performance, ensuring effective transport planning.
  • Strategic Intersection & Access Planning – Developed road and intersection improvements, optimising entry/exit points, traffic signals, and parking layouts for smooth operations.
  • Enhanced Pedestrian & Active Transport Infrastructure – Identified the need for a dedicated shared path to improve student safety and encourage sustainable transport options, facilitating a strong connection to Flemington Road’s light rail services.
